End of Life Care

Population projections for elderly populations

Life expectancy is increasing and people are living longer.  The actual numbers of deaths in the population is projected to rise (Gomes et al 2008) along with a growth in the proportions of older people.  As the population both increases overall and with a higher proportion in the older age groups then the end of life care will need to be planned to accommodate these needs. Older people are more likely to have multi morbidities with more complex care needs, to have a lower proportion of home deaths. Older people report a higher proportion of other than home as their preferred place of deaths (e.g. hospice).
