What are the unmet needs / service gaps?
- Nationally, 500,000 people are facing poor health or disability after treatment for cancer. Many of these problems can persist for at least 10 years after treatment
- Commissioners have limited understanding of the specific social care needs of cancer survivors
- Social services in the UK are not meeting the social care needs of people with cancer
- Two periods when people with cancer make greater use of hospital care are following diagnosis and end of life. More research is needed to understand the interaction between health and social care in the drive to reduce unplanned hospital care. The total cost of social care for those with cancer in their final year of life was £12.9 million while the hospital cost was over £67 million.
